A seasonal battle begins again tonight for Albuquerque area gamers.

Expert players of popular video games such as "CounterStrike: Source" and "Command & Conquer 3" will bring their computers and play against each other for 48 hours straight at the Intel LAN Fest in Rio Rancho.

On the line? Gear and gadget prizes worth more than $20,000 - and more important, bragging rights for the top teams, said Steve Vansickle, who is coordinating the event for Intel Corp.

"We'll also have a few surprises," Vansickle said, adding that there's a chance visitors will be able to play a demo of Blizzard's much-anticipated upcoming game "Starcraft 2" at the event.

Intel has been a major sponsor of LAN events - which are tournament games played on computer networks - for the past four years, mostly with an Albuquerque gaming group called PAGLAN.

This is the first time Intel is putting on its own LAN fest in the Albuquerque area.

The company plans to give all the proceeds to the United Way of Central New Mexico, Vansickle said.

The last Intel-sponsored PAGLAN event, in early April, had 235 participants.
