UNM Women's Basketball: Lobos rout Northwestern to sweep tourney
Kimble earns MVP
Northwestern decided to play a zone defense against the Lobos, but the strategy backfired.
The University of New Mexico hit seven 3-pointers to take a 37-16 advantage at intermission in the final game of the Women's Sports Foundation Tournament Sunday afternoon at The Pit.
The Lobos played tough defense in the second half en route to a 67-38 victory over the Wildcats, who were missing heralded freshman Amy Jaeschke (out with a broken hand).
Senior guard Brandi Kimble earned the Most Valuable Player award. She had 17 points and seven rebounds against Northwestern. Joining Kimble on the all-tournament team from UNM were sophomore point guard Amy Beggin and senior forward Dionne Marsh.
UNM sophomore guard Eileen Weissmann added 11 pionts, including a trio of 3-pointers that helped the Lobos set the tone in the first half.
UNM finished the tournament 3-0, also getting victories over Western Michigan and Dayton in the three-day event.
UNM is in negotiations to host the Women's Sports Foundation Tournament again next season. The three games count as two games towards the NCAA limit.
In Sunday's earlier game, Dayton defeated Western Michigan 88-63.
