The Linz is a big fan of Thanksgiving Day.
The Linz loves it when his family gets together and eats like KKOB's Mike Roberts at a free media luncheon.
The Linz just wishes they would once invite The Great One to the feed.
The Linz's best invitation this Thanksgiving comes from some redneck Linz fanatics in Clovis.
They invited The Linz to come and watch them carve up one turkey on Thursday and another turkey on Friday.
The Linz is guessing the Friday turkey is the La Cueva Mallers.
The Linz probably will turn down the Clovis invite. The last time The Linz ate Thanksgiving dinner in a Southeast New Mexico town, The Linz was not happy with some of the side dishes.
The Linz doesn't like possum pie and sweet potato grits. The Linz doesn't like turkey stuffed with "road kill dressing."
But The Linz has extra reasons to rejoice this Thanksgiving. The Great One just found out there is a remote possibility the New Mexico Lobos could return to the prestigious and fabled New Mexico Bowl.
The Linz hears that ESPN is excited, too. So excited that ESPN has added a new clause to the contract.
It reads: "If the Lobos return this season, ESPN has reached an agreement that the game be televised by The Mountain."
Actually, that would be a great thing for attendance at the bowl.
Nobody in Albuquerque — or in any city featuring a Mountain West Conference team — has ever been able to find The Mountain on a TV set.
The Linz thinks maybe when The Mountain went into existence it failed to purchase a few of the necessities:
Like cameras.
So, if fans want to see their beloved Lobos play in the storied New Mexico Bowl, the fans would be forced to go down to the stadium.
That — or try to find The Mountain on a TV.
The Linz figures there is only one thing in the world tougher to find than The Mountain on a TV set.
And that's an Albuquerque Class 5A school in the state championship game.
The Linz embarrassed himself last week with one of his worst playoff weeks ever falling to an unforgivable 10-6 mark. The Great One sits 138-46 on the season.
Here are The Linz Gems for this week with home teams in capital letters:
CLOVIS by 14 over La Cueva — 7 p.m. Friday: The Linz figures the Mallers' war cry all the way to the Santa Rosa turnoff will be: "Beat the ÕCats." The Linz figures at halftime the Mallers will be chanting, "We want our mommies. We want our mommies." The Linz figures the Clovis fans' chant at halftime will be, "Betty Joe, go warm up the pickup. This game is done over."
CIBOLA by 8 over Eldorado — 7 p.m. Friday, Milne: Thank the Bracket Gods for this game. Otherwise the Class 5A semis would be South vs. South and South vs. South. If Eldorado wins this game, The Linz will insist Eagles' Charlie Dotson coach the Lobos the next time they get into a bowl game.
MAYFIELD by 21 over Rio Rancho — 7 p.m. Friday: There are several things The Linz can always bank on. The IRS will find The Linz. (But never at an Albuquerque High game). A Milne Dog will bring The Linz to his knees. La Cueva will run up the score at least one time each season. And Rio Rancho's season will end against a team from the South.
LAS CRUCES HIGH by 12 over Manzano — 1 p.m. Saturday: The Linz hears Manzano coach Aaron O-Camp-Out-At-The-Buffet has a huge choice to make today: Turkey or ham, ham or turkey. The Linz hears O-Camp-Out came up with a brilliant solution to the problem: Ham stuffing for the turkey.
ST. PIUS X by 7 over Kirtland Central — 1 p.m. Saturday, Milne: The Sartans actually have a good shot at winning this game. Kirtland Central is up North and there is only one thing that scares Sartans come playoff time — Artesia.
LOVINGTON by 20 over Albuquerque Academy — 1 p.m. Saturday: The Linz thinks this game should be determined by combining the numbers on the scoreboard with the SAT numbers posted by the players. Next week The Linz will explain to the Lovington folks what an SAT is. (No, it doesn't stand for "Skunk At Ten O'clock.").
LOBOS by 21 over UNLV — 3:30 p.m. Saturday: The Linz can't wait for the Lobos to extend their regular season and play their 13th game of the year. Something called the New Mexico Bowl.
