Despite warning from city of Albuquerque, porn movie festival goes on
The show will indeed go on.
Organizers of Pornotopia, a weekend-long erotic film festival, were told this afternoon that showing the films could be in violation of city law.
Molly Adler, co-owner of Self Serve, which organized the film festival, said representatives from the city dropped off a notice at the Guild Cinema just before 5 p.m. today. According to Adler, the notice said that proceeding with Pornotopia could be a violation of city ordinance.
The Guild, the city says, is not zoned to show adult films.
When Adler was first informed of the notice, it was uncertain whether the festival would go on.
"So we don't get arrested," she said at the time, "we probably aren't going to show any movies tonight."
That however changed by 7 p.m., the time the first porn film was scheduled to be shown.
Organizers decided to hold a pre-movie press conference instead, which was to be attended by members of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Matthew Conrad, code compliant official for the city Planning Department, said the city did not shut down the festival.
"What we've done is, we had great concern from the neighborhood, they've expressed concern themselves," Conrad said. "I don't know if it (the festival) meets the definition of adult amusement. What we did was went ahead and gave a letter outlining what adult amusement was and asked them not to violate the law."
Conrad said his department acts as "educators for the land use."
"We are merely giving them the information so they can make an informed decision," he said. "There are zone categories that allow these, and this one does not."
