The charter school for the Metropolitan Detention Center has won unanimous approval from the Albuquerque Board of Education and a promise to help it get state funding for a January opening.
"The sooner the better. This is a great school," school board member Berna Facio said.
Special state funding will be required from the Public Education Department, Bernalillo County Public Safety Director John Dantis said.
"It's never been done before," he said of securing funds for a charter midyear. "But there's always the first time."
Inmates at the West Side jail and in the county's Community Custody Program will be able to earn a high school diploma or GED from the charter school, which will have classrooms at the jail. A faculty of at least 13 will be hired for about 250 students.
