U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici said Friday he will donate to charity a $2,500 contribution from the Alliance for the West, Sen. Larry Craig's political action committee.

Craig, an Idaho Republican, will resign from the Senate amid a furor over his arrest and guilty plea in a police sex sting in an airport men's room in Minneapolis, Republican officials said Friday.

Domenici's finance staff discovered the $2,500 contribution in reviewing their records Thursday. Domenici, an Albuquerque Republican, said the charity to receive the donation will be designated later.

Craig is expected to announce at a news conference today in Boise that he will resign effective Sept. 30, according to four state GOP officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The announcement comes just five days after the disclosure that Craig pleaded guilty Aug. 1 to a reduced misdemeanor charge arising out of his arrest June 11.

The three-term Republican had maintained he did nothing wrong except for making the guilty plea without consulting a lawyer. But he found almost no support among Republicans in his home state or Washington.
