FOUR DOWNS
1. The only way to disrupt the Aggies offense is to hit the quarterback. The Lobos' defense has to put immense pressure on Chase Holbrook, forcing him into turnovers or bad decisions.
2. The offense has to score touchdowns. The Lobos can't settle for a slew of field-goal attempts and expect to beat a productive New Mexico State air-raid offense. The best defense probably won't be able to completely shut down the Aggies.
3. The Lobos can't afford more trouble on special teams. Jordan Scott has to boot punts and kickoffs deeper and the coverage team has to pin the Aggies in their territory. John Sullivan has to hit field goals.
4. If the game becomes a defensive stalemate, the Lobos need their fans to keep cheering rabidly. UNM's biggest advantage going into this game is its home turf. If the Lobos faithful don't intimidate the Aggies regardless of what is happening on the field, it's anybody's ball game.
ON THE SPOT
LOBOS
Sophomore QB Donovan Porterie
Porterie rarely threw a pass on target during the Lobos' season opener at UTEP. He has to make better decisions and give his receivers a chance to make big plays under pressure.
Junior Lobo Clint McPeek
McPeek plays the role of a roving free safety, a hot spot for the Aggies offense to attack. By lining up extra receivers, New Mexico State will force McPeek to make plays on quicker and shiftier players.
AGGIES
Junior QB Chase Holbrook
Holbrook was rusty in his debut against Southeastern Louisiana last week, tossing three interceptions. He can't afford the same kind of trouble against the Lobos, who boast a lot more talent and tenacity on defense.
Senior DE Brandon McKinney
McKinney, a Rio Rancho High grad, was spurned by the Lobos and is eager to make his mark in this rivalry game. The Aggies need him to pressure the quarterback and disrupt the running game.
