John Rogers' two children were home when he was gunned down in his doorway, the victim of a drug-related confrontation that didn't even involve him, police say.

Rogers, 35, was killed around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at his apartment in the 4500 block of Carlisle Boulevard Northeast. Albuquerque Police Department spokesman John Walsh said Rogers was shot multiple times in the torso.

Police are searching for two suspects. Walsh said investigators believe the two had a drug-related association with an immediate family member of Rogers.

Walsh described Rogers as an "innocent victim."

Police have a good idea of the identity of the two suspects but aren't releasing details, Walsh said. They're also looking for three vehicles: a green Dodge pickup, a green Honda Civic and a gold four-door sedan.

Walsh said police don't know if Rogers' two children, ages 9 and 11, witnessed the shooting but said they "definitely witnessed the aftermath."

A family friend was also in the apartment when Rogers was killed. Walsh said the shooting followed a short confrontation between Rogers and the assailants.

Police are awaiting autopsy results but say it appears a single gun was used to kill Rogers.
