A road crew worker picking up orange traffic barrels was left in critical condition this morning after he was run over and pinned underneath a car that failed to merge in a Paseo del Norte construction zone.
The man, whose name and age weren't available this morning, and the male driver who ran over him and into the Advantage Barricade truck with which the man was working were both taken to University of New Mexico Hospital.
"He has some pretty significant injuries," said Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department spokesman Lt. David Knowles. "The offending driver had less serious injuries."
Preliminary information about the 9 a.m. crash between Second and Jefferson Streets shows the driver was in the right eastbound lane behind the barricade truck, Knowles said.
Investigators were trying to determine if the worker was riding in the back of the truck or was walking when the car's driver smashed directly into the back of the truck, Knowles said.
When firefighters and paramedics arrived, the worker was under the car, which sustained a smashed front end, Knowles said.
The cause of the crash has yet to be determined. Knowles said there was no indication that the driver had a medical episode.
The westbound portion of this section of Paseo del Norte was under construction late last week to repair a sinkhole caused by a broken water line. Crews shut down the eastbound section Friday night, and the road was partially closed during the weekend for related repairs.
