— The existence of a separate maximum-security lockup for 15 key al-Qaida members has been confirmed by Rear Adm. Mark Buzby, the top commander of detention operations on the sprawling U.S. Navy base.

Known as Camp 7, the mysterious facility is so protected that its very location is top secret.

Buzby said Wednesday the inmates at Camp 7 must be kept apart from other prisoners to prevent them from retaliating against long-term detainees who have talked to interrogators.

The existence of Camp 7 was not publicly known until it was mentioned in December by attorneys for Majid Khan, a former Baltimore resident who allegedly plotted to bomb gas stations in the United States.

The detention center at Guantanamo Bay was opened in January 2002 in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
