Sloppy wins count the same as sensational ones.
The University of New Mexico women's basketball team took a 63-54 victory over San Diego State on Wednesday night in The Pit, a win that falls under the sloppy category.
UNM improved to 13-10 overall and took sole possession of fifth place at 5-5 in the Mountain West Conference with the season sweep of the Aztecs. SDSU fell to 13-9 and 4-6.
Marsh led the Lobos with 15 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and 12th of her career.
"We played pretty well," Marsh said. "We got the win."
UNM trailed 26-25 at halftime but rallied in the second half to beat the Aztecs for the 18th straight time. SDSU hasn't beaten the Lobos since 1995.
But this one didn't come easy. The mistake-prone Lobos finished with 23 turnovers, a total that "felt to me like 43," said UNM coach Don Flanagan.
"Anytime you play them (Aztecs), it's going to be a grind becaus of the pressure they bring," Flanagan said.
Fortunately for the Lobos, the Aztecs were as sloppy with the basketball, also committing 23 turnovers.
UNM senior guard Brandi Kimble was the only other Lobo to finish in double figures with 14 points. She also had six rebounds.
Freshman forward Jessica Kielpinski added nine points and seven rebounds.
SDSU's Jene Morris led all scorers with 22 points. But UNM held the Aztec inside duo of Paris Johnson and Allison Duffy to a combined eight points. The twosome were averaging more than 23 points coming into the game.
"That was the key to the game," Flanagan said. "On the inside, they didn't get much."
UNM next plays at TCU at 1 p.m. Sunday in Fort Worth in a game to be televised by The Mountain.
