SANTA FE Nearly 3,000 cases of newly recalled beef sent to New Mexico schools that participate in the federal school lunch program must be destroyed.
The state Human Services Department said Tuesday that 2,772 cases still are in school warehouse inventories. Each case holds 40 pounds.
The beef from Chino, Calif. Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. is the subject of an animal abuse investigation after an undercover video showed crippled and sick animals being taken in for slaughter, contrary to federal regulations.
