The metro area's top teams, by sport, according to high school reporter James Staley. For more information on the rankings, go to the "High School Sports" blog.
Boys basketball
1. Highland
2. St. Pius X
3. La Cueva
4. Rio Rancho
5. Los Lunas
Trib says: Highland and La Cueva have clinched their districts. St. Pius X and newcomer Rio Rancho can do the same with one more win. The Rams have won five straight and averaged 81.5 points per game. Los Lunas bounced back after a close loss to Manzano. Cibola dropped out after two losses without forward Jon Mader.
Girls basketball
1. La Cueva
2. St. Pius X
3. Moriarty
4. Rio Rancho
5. Eldorado
Trib says: No changes; can't remember the last time that happened. La Cueva and Rio Rancho have already clinched their districts. St. Pius X and Moriarty could play three more times before the state tournament; a win in the regular season finale Friday by Moriarty would set up a playoff to determine the No. 1 seed. And both teams should play for the District 5-4A title.
