SAN JOSE, Calif. Top-seed Andy Roddick easily defeated Japanese teen star Kei Nishikori 6-2, 6-4 to advance to to the quarterfinals of the SAP Open.
James Blake also advanced, overcoming first-serve problems to beat Jesse Levine 6-3, 6-4. Earlier, John Isner beat third-seeded Tommy Haas 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3, No. 5 Mardy Fish got past Denis Gremelmayr 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3, and Lu Yen-hsun beat Wayne Odesnik 6-4, 6-4.
Copa Telmex: Sixth-seeded Igor Andreev beat Jiri Vanek 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 to reach the Copa Telmex quarterfinals in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Andreev will face Jose Acasuso, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Daniel Gimeno Traver.
Also, eighth-seeded Filippo Volandri defeated Sergio Roitman 7-5, 7-5 to set up a match against Agustin Calleri, a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 winner over Luis Horna.
Nadal falls in upset: Top-seeded Rafael Nadal lost to Andreas Seppi of Italy 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on a day of upsets, leaving the ABN Amro without seeded players entering the quarterfinals.
Beaten earlier in the day were second-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, third-seeded David Ferrer of Spain and fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic. Sharapova rolls on: Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova reached the Qatar Open quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Tamarine Tanasugarn. The fourth-seeded Sharapova will play Caroline Wozniakci, who ousted Anabel Medina Garrigues 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3.
Second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova was upset by Sybille Bammer, 6-3, 7-6 (8), and sixth-seeded Venus Williams lost to Dominika Cibulkova 6-3, 6-3. Also, third-seeded Jelena Jankovic beat Ai Sugiyama 6-1, 6-2 and will play Li Na, who defeated 12th-seeded Shahar Peer 6-1, 6-3. Vera Zvonareva topped 11th-seeded Dinara Safina 7-5, 6-3.
