Search continues for missing snowboarders

Searches continued unsuccessfully today for missing snowboarders at Ski Santa Fe and Colorado's Wolf Creek.

Adam Putnam, 36, and Rachel Fehl, 30, called authorities Sunday, saying they were lost near Ski Santa Fe and had spent the night in a snow cave, said State Police Spokesman Peter Olson. He was not sure how they knew each other or where they were from.

Meanwhile, the search continued for Michael George and Kyle Kerschen, both 27 and of Albuquerque, at the Wolf Creek ski area in Colorado. The pair was reported missing Saturday, and apparently spent Friday night on the mountain.

Olson said Putnam and Fehl were probably not equipped for an extended stay in the mountains, which here hammered with search-impeding snow over the weekend.

"They are dressed for snowboarding, but when they called in Sunday, they said they were cold, wet and hungry," Olson said. "That is not a good condition to be in when you're trying to survive in the mountains."

George and Kerschen were also probably not equipped for the survival situation they found themselves in, said George's mother, Laura George.

Putnam and Fehl had not made any more contact since Sunday, Olson said, possibly because their cell phone died.

Dangerous weather slowed search efforts for both groups of snowboarders. Police could not use a helicopter to search for Putnam and Fehl, and were able to use one for the first time at Wolf Creek on Monday.

Olson said Putnam and Fehl took a lift to the highest point of Ski Santa Fe and hiked out of bounds before getting lost in blizzard conditions.

About 20 people, mostly on snowshoes and skis, were participating in the search, he said.

A multiagency search for George and Kerschen included snowmobiles and ski patrols, said Mineral County Sheriff Fred Hosselkus, but had not found any trace of the pair as of this evening.
