Wyoming beats New Mexico 58-52

UNM's Dionne Marsh powers for 24 points

The Wyoming Cowboys remembered Lobos Dionne Marsh.

The University of New Mexico Lobos seemed to forget about their senior star = until it was too late.

Marsh took 11 shots in the first half and scored 16 points. Marsh took seven shots in the second half and scored eight points.

The turnaround in UNM's ability to get Marsh the ball inside -- and UNM's inability to hit from the perimeter -- led to a 58-52 Wyoming win tonight (Wednesday) in The Pit.

It was a key Mountain West Conference breakthrough win on the road for the No. 21-ranked Cowgirls who were the league's preseason pick to grab the 2008 title. UNM was predicted to finish fourth.

It's too early in the season to call it a major blow to UNM's title hopes, but a home loss to the league's top team is not a good sign or a good beginning.

"We need to win at home," said Lobos coach Don Flanagan.

UNM had a 26-20 halftime lead, but at the 15:30 mark of the second half Rebecca Vanderjagt hit a 3-pointer to hand Wyoming its first lead of the game 31-30.

Wyoming led 47-41 with 5:51 to play before the Lobos and The Pit energized for a final run.

Brandi Kimble banged in a trey = UNM's only 3-pointer of the game = from the left side at 4:31 to pull the Lobos within three points at 47-44. Marsh followed with a power drive and a left hand to make it 47-46.

Wyoming's Megan McGuffey got held by UNM's Amanda Adamson at 3:16 and hit one free throw to make it 48-46.

UNM's Eileen Weissmann scored a layup to tie the game at 48-all. Kimble came down and bumped Wyoming's Hanna Zavecz inside at 2:29. The Cowgirl hit both free shots to push Wyoming up 50-48.

Marsh hit two from the line to tie it at 50-all. Wyoming jumped up again 52-50 when McGuffey burned UNM's Adamson on a baseline drive and floated in a short jumper.

Marsh tied the game again with 1:02 to play with two free throw to make it 52-all. Marsh then fouled Zavecz on a drive and the Cowgirl hit her freebies to put Wyoming up 54-52.

That's when it got away from the Lobos.

Wyoming got the ball back on a turnover and UNM's Amy Beggin fouled Dominique Sisk about 40 feet away from the basket with seven seconds on the shot clock and 21.6 seconds on the game clock. Sisk hit both free throws to push Wyoming up 56-52.

It was desperation time for the Lobos and Beggin came down and threw up a quick trey that was blocked. Wyoming got the rebound and Sisk was again fouled. She hit both free shots to form the 58-52 final.

Marsh ended the game with 24 points and seven rebounds going 8-of-18 from the field and 8-of-8 from the line. She was the only Lobo in double figures. Wyoming got 14 points from Zavecz and 11 points from Jodi Bolerjack.

The Lobos shot 18-of-48 from the field for 37.5 percent. Wyoming was 17-of-47 for 36.2 percent. Wyoming's edge was going 7-of-18 from 3-point range to 1-of-5 for the Lobos.
