I'm turning in my remote control today and walking away from the glamorous job of watching TV in my dog-hair-covered living room.

Different pastures await me — pastures where I'll be required to actually read books and deal directly with real human beings.

It's a frightening thought, I know.

In honor of my never-ending love of the tube, though, here are my favorite things on TV.

Can't-miss shows

1. "Battlestar Galactica" I know it's science fiction, which means that only about five of you watch it. I just wish that everyone could see how awe-inspiring the acting, writing and ideas are. It's not always pleasant, but it is always good.

2. "Friday Night Lights" Football does not interest me. I root for the Dillon Panthers through all their trials and tribulations anyway. No other show captures small-town life quite like it.

3. "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" This is the tackiest and most outrageous comedy on TV. God bless America and free speech for allowing this hilarity to air.

4. "Lost" The ratings are down, but my love for this drama remains. I'll keep hanging on until I learn every last stinking mystery on that island, even if it kills me.

5. "Ugly Betty" Sweet, lighthearted and the best clothes on TV, well except for poor Betty.

6. "Grey's Anatomy" Despite the awful George/Izzie cheater storyline and the ongoing saga of Meredith and Derek, this soapy show manages to connect with me every single week.

7. "The Amazing Race" There's always a bickering or vicious duo to root against in this reality standout. The places the teams visit and things they do in their travels truly are amazing sometimes.

8. "Top Chef" I can't taste the food, yet I know these competitors are exceptionally talented when they manage to make a delicious meal out of Ho Ho's and eel in less than 30 minutes.

9. "The Office" We've all had a nimrod supervisor like Steve Carell's Michael Scott, and I could only dream of doing half the things his staff does to torture him.

10. "Brothers & Sisters" It's not nearly as compelling as last season, because of staff changes, but I still love the family dynamics, and darn it if Sally Field isn't the best mom I've ever seen on the small screen.
