This won't be the year for Albuquerque Public Schools to win over the Legislature on school police powers.

School district administrators on Monday recommended to the Albuquerque Board of Education that they wait until next year to seek legislative authority to create a full-fledged police force in city schools.

The recommendation followed Gov. Bill Richardson's refusal to include the issue on his priority list for action in the 2008 Legislature, which convened today.

The school board needs legislative action to create a police force because current law allows only universities and colleges to create their own police departments.

The school system has armed, certified officers, but the officers don't have full police powers such as access to the National Criminal Information Center and federal grants for law enforcement programs.
