RIO RANCHO Central New Mexico Community College plans to open a campus here in two years, and city voters will go to the polls March 4 to decide whether the University of New Mexico will do the same.
Residents are being asked to approve a 1/4-cent increase in the city's gross receipts tax to raise cash for UNM to build a campus adjacent to the CNM property.
If approved, the tax increase would add 25 cents to the price of a $100 item purchased in Rio Rancho starting July 1. It would remain in effect for 20 years.
UNM's and CNM's plans complement each other to bring a four-year degree university institution to New Mexico's fastest growing city.
