Blowing snow and freezing rain combined to turn a large swath of New Mexico — including Albuquerque — into an ice rink early today.

The National Weather Service said snow that hit the state late Monday melted when it hit warm roads, then froze as a cold front hit, covering roads with a treacherous glaze of ice.

Citing hazardous driving conditions, Albuquerque and Rio Rancho public schools closed for the day, while the University of New Mexico canceled classes starting before 10 a.m.

State Police shut down I-40 from Albuquerque's 98th Street to the Arizona state line for much of the night.

The interstate reopened about 6 a.m., but several roads in northern New Mexico remained closed, including U.S. 64 from Chama to the Colorado state line.

Law enforcement officers in and around Albuquerque had their hands full with crashes ranging from fender-benders to rollovers. No fatalities were reported.

Albuquerque Police Department spokesman John Walsh said several streets, including Paseo del Norte at Golf Course Road Northwest, were closed because of ice, creating additional traffic problems. The level of crashes and problems was typical for an icy morning, he said.

But there isn't much relief in sight for winter-weary New Mexicans. Significant snow accumulations are expected Wednesday throughout western and northern New Mexico, while Albuquerque could get rain or snow, the weather service says.
