  • Nov. 15, 1947 Bill Richardson is born in Pasadena, Calif., to a Mexican mother, Maria Luisa Lopez-Collada, and a U.S. father, William Blaine Richardson.
  • 1960 Richardson enrolls at Middlesex School in Concord, Mass. Richardson grew up in Mexico City until moving to Boston at age 13.
  • 1966 He starts at Tufts University, where he would earn bachelor's degrees in French and political science and a master's in international affairs.
  • 1972 His father dies at age 81.
  • 1977 Richardson works as a staffer on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Starts visiting New Mexico, intent on moving here and someday running for Congress.
  • 1979 Decides he's going to challenge seven-term incumbent U.S. Rep. Manuel Lujan.
  • 1980 Loses to Lujan by 1 percent.
  • 1982 New Mexico gets a third congressional seat. Richardson wins the Democratic primary in a four-way race, then wins the general election.
  • 1997 Steps down from his 14-year stint in Congress when President Bill Clinton taps him to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
  • 1998 Named secretary of the Department of Energy.
  • 2001 Richardson works as a consultant for Kissinger McLarty Associates. He travels, lecturing and teaching as he mulls a run for New Mexico governor.
  • 2002 Elected governor along with Lt. Gov. Diane Denish.
  • 2006: Re-elected to a second four-year term.
