Minnesota bridge collapse
Bridge collapses over Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

The crumpled remains of the Interstate 35W bridge over the Mississippi River were still shifting on Aug. 2 because of currents in the river. The bridge buckled and collapsed during evening rush hour on Aug. 1, sending dozens of cars plummeting more than 60 feet into the river. Divers searched the river for bodies on Aug. 2 among the submerged cars and twisted steel. As many as 50 vehicles were believed to be in the river.
