1st Friday: Albuquerque earns the title of Fittest City of 2007
With miles of outdoor trails, hundreds of parks and dozens of sports fields, the Duke City is one active place -- and people outside New Mexico are taking notice.

Mike Watkins, 45, has been playing sand volleyball for the past nine years to keep active. He said he enjoys the competition with other local teams at Charlie's Sand Box in northeast Albuquerque, which was recently was named the "Fittest City" in the nation by Men's Fitness magazine.

Asae Dean, who has been doing yoga for two years, participates in a class at Bikram's Yoga in Downtown Albuquerque. The class goes through its exercises in a heated room between 105 and 110 degrees.

For the past eight years, David Pool swims laps three times a week at Valley Pool in the North Valley. He also rides a bike and walks his dog to keep fit. Albuquerque recently received national attention by Men's Fitness magazine, taking top honors in its list of "Fittest Cities."

Beckie Lobb plays volleyball at Charlie's Sand Box with friends. The facility at Stone Face Tavern at 8201 San Pedro Drive N.E. hosts 32 teams each night and a total of about 1,800 participants per week.

Patrick McKnight rises early to get in his workouts during the 6-8 a.m. lap swims at Valley Pool. Albuquerque boasts five indoor pools and seven outdoor pools, including the indoor/outdoor West Mesa Aquatics Center. The facility was completed in 2005 and features an Olympic-sized pool.
